Who:
Assistant Section Officer, Hazel Furney, Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) of the Royal Air Force

“Assistant Section Officer Hazel Furney was a Photographic Interpreter at RAF Medmenham. In 1943 she was one of ten WAAFs chosen to go to North Africa after Operation Torch, and they were the first service women to arrive in El Alamein. In December 1943 the WAAFs were flown to San Severo, southern Italy. She was an expert at aircraft recognition, and found it interesting to climb inside the wreckage of German planes which she had only identified earlier that day. This is her at Foggia airfield doing just that.”
